Hello fellow road trippers: You can perk up any trip with the delicious food and many interesting activities happening on I-95. This Trip Tips newsletter will provide you with continuous info on what's happening and how to enjoy your pit stops on I-95. Road trips are still less expensive than flying, so use our guidebook, Drive I-95: Exit by Exit Info, Maps, History and Trivia (Pet Accommodations Edition), for colorful easy-to-follow pictorial maps and fun stories. Get off an exit and enjoy some of these: 1 - The First Urban Myth 2 - Semper Fidelis 3 - Rub Shoulders with Marines 4 - Broadway on I-95 5 - New York City Area upscale hotel bargain 1 - The First Urban Myth CT Exit 58: The Thanksgiving Dinner might have been one of the first urban myths. At the Henry Whitfield State Museum (the oldest house in Connecticut circa 1639 and the oldest stone house in New England), a costumed 17^th century interpreter takes you through the house and the myths. Included in the tour is the history of Thanksgiving, Christmas and what winter was like for the Puritans in 1621, but also why we eat turkey on Thanksgiving and what the football connection is. "Feasts Famine and Fables" tours will be given November 24^th to November 26^th 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 248 Old Whitfield St., Guilford, Tel: 203-453-2457. 2 - Semper Fidelis VA Exit 150A: Finally open, adjacent to the Marine Corps base in Quantico, VA, is the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Its soaring design evokes the image of the flag-raisers of Iwo Jima. Go through marine boot camp and follow interactive exhibits through the WWII Pacific Theatre. Learn about fighting the Korean war on the streets of Seoul and then to the hamlets, jungles and rice patties of Vietnam, where helicopters meant the difference between life and death. Irreplaceable artifacts, including aircraft (A-4 Skyhawk is a movie screen) and tanks immerse you in the sights and sounds of Marines in action. Tel: 800-397-7585 [http://www.njparksandforests.org/parks/monbat.html] 3 - Rub Shoulders with Marines VA Exit 150A: Globe and Laurel - Major Rick Spooner and his wife Gloria are the hosts at this pub, which is located only a rifle shot from the museum. If you are fascinated by military people and paraphernalia, come here to rub shoulders with the who's who of the Marine Corps (notice the personalized pewter mugs hanging from the bar). There is a display which traces the evolution of the U.S. Marine emblem, and the ceiling is plastered with civil police shoulder patches. Food is reasonably priced, with the popular Maryland crab cakes, roast prime rib of beef, Norwegian salmon with a garlic, ginger and white wine marinade or duck a l'orange. A cute Marine salute: desserts are called Ruffles & Flourishes, and there is no charge for "young recruits" under 5. Hours: Mon-Fri 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. for lunch and Mon-Sat 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for dinner. Tel: 703-221-5763. 4 - Broadway on I-95 MD Exit 57: Toby's Dinner Theatre in the Best Western Hotel, Baltimore - Wow. Instead of a night on the road with the boob tube, why not get energized by a live musical production - and then plop right into bed at this Best Western? The quality of the performance would make NYC proud. The show starts with dinner (buffet style - roast beef, turkey, chicken marsala, garlic mashies, spinach casserole, BBQ pork, fresh salad bar and ice cream sundae bar for dessert), but keep an eye on your servers, for they become the performers. Shows: November 16 - January 14, ?It?s a Wonderful Life? and January 23rd to March 18th, "The Full Monty". Tel: (hotel) 410-633-9500, (show) 866-99Tobys or 410-649-1660 [http://tobysdinnertheatre.com/tobysbaltimore_003.htm] tobysdinnertheatre.com 5 - ?New York City? area upscale hotel bargain NJ Exit 70: If you enjoy the luxury of a full service Marriott but don?t want to spend Manhattan prices for it, stay at the Marriott Glenpointe at the top of NJ. By car it?s only a half hour to Manhattan, but even better: leave the car in the free lot and hop on the bus ($3.10) on the corner. Luxuriate in the oversized rooms, take some down time in the pool or gym or plan a spa day - a good balance to the frantic Big Apple activities. The Tuscan Grille offers delectables like: endive salad (pears, gorgonzola, walnuts), mozzarella Spiedini (lemon butter and capers), short rib gnocchi, chicken with olives in lemon sauce over polenta, and steak topped with tomatoes, fennel, eggplant and endive. Lunch might be white bean and escarole soup, pesto salmon salad or a Tuscan burger. Tel: 201-836-0600.
